V: ...it's a really honor to be here with you, and, uh, the first question would be why has it been so short?
FZ: I didn't think it was short.

V: He said that the audience was asking you to come out again and come out again and you didn't... why didn't you?
FZ: Ordinarily we do two encores and we did two encores tonight.

PV: Bueno, pues yo, me gustaría preguntarle... How did you designed your show in terms of music, soul... such of soul, such of rhythm & blues... talk me or tell me about Chemistry.
FZ: The show that we played tonight was designed to function in that building, which has a lot of echoes, so the songs were chosen not just because of the style of music but because they would work in that building.

V: As Paco says rhythm & blues and he thinks you have the best collection in the world of rhythm & blues...
FZ: I think I have the best collection too, it's not the largest, but it's for me the best because it's all the songs that I like.

Black support.
V: Yes, talk about your black support in your music... what about the black support in your music.
FZ: I don't understand what it means 'black support'.
PV: Uh, talking about soul and the old rhyme and styling, you know, how... how black people plays, you know? You understand?
FZ: That is a musical style that I've always enjoyed and, uh... I have a number of different black people in the band through the years. I like that style of performance, I like that musical world and... I enjoy writing and performing in that band. But what we do is basically not soul music, we have elements of soul, elements of rhythm & blues, elements of, uh, country & western, all different strange things, all mixed together, to make it special.

PV: I was asking you about Chemistry.
FZ: That is... that is Chemistry. Actually is more accuratelly Alchemy.

V: He says this is a quite important tour because of your celebrating your 20 anniversary and 20 years are a lot of years in the music world, and, but this 20th anniversary is also noticed for a few changes, as for example the record company, why have you changed your record company?
FZ: For the same reason that periodically one must change their socks and their underwear.

V: He says he likes the record you produced of...
R3: Grand Funk.
V: Grand Funk, and why don't you produce people like him again.
FZ: I don't enjoy doing productions, because when you make a record for somebody else, if it sells it's your fault that it didn't sell more, and if it doesn't sell, it's your fault because you ruined somebody's career.

V: And, talk about your new LP that hasn't come out yet in Spain, we're waiting to see it.
FZ: Well, there's more than one, first you're going to see a double-LP called Them Or Us.
FZ: Shortly thereafter you will see a three box-set, a three records box-set called Thing-Fish.
FZ: And there's more.

V: He says that you're really having a good time, this is a really good period, a real... time.
FZ: Well, these productions were done within the last two years, but, for all the fans that have been waiting for a long time for product there will be four completely different style albums, all released in a short period of time.

V: Why don't you record your own classical compositions?.
FZ: I have, they are coming out.

V: They say the versions other people do of your classic music are more known.
FZ: Well, you don't know that there's an album by the London Symphony Orchestra which will be coming out through EMI, it's already available in the US but now EMI it's gonna release it in Europe.

V: He wanted to ask you about a person, maybe have just been discovered now called Francesco Zappa.
FZ: He... nobody knows when he was born or when he died, but he wrote music between the years 1766 and 1788.

V: And why did you like Francesco, because you really like... because you thought the name was nice, because is the same as you, or because you thought that his music is really good?
FZ: I didn't have any idea what his music sounded like until I acquired the manuscripts and then have the computer play them.

V: He says that now here in the hotel we can see some, uh... music paper, don't you ever stop working, was that he says.
FZ: Uh... yes, I do stop working every once in a while.

V: Why a contest about a glove... about the glove?
FZ: Because people in the rock'n'roll business who wear a glove on one hand are really silly.

FZ: Michael Jackson, Billy Idol, Prince, you know, many people wear one glove, even years ago, ten years, twelve years ago, there are groups that wore one glove, a group called the Music Machine that had a record called "Talk Talk."

V: He says what are your rememberings about 20 years ago of all the groups he says, he has mentioned.
FZ: ...Mamas & the Papas, the Mamas & the Papas used to come and see us when we played in Los Angeles, I knew them before the group was even formed, and as far as Jefferson Airplane goes, they were an opening act several times at the Fillmore West, in those early days.

V: What you remember from your first group that was called Blackout?
FZ: The reason the group was called The Blackouts was because they would drink so much that after the concert they would black out.

V: He says that one of the musicians tonight on his t-shirt said Grateful... Grateful Dead, is that any... is that any relation with Jerry Garcia?
FZ: We played a concert with Jerry Garcia in Chicago about six weeks ago, and that's where the shirt comes from.

V: He wants to know if you think is still valuable... excuse me, if you still thinks it's true the phrase, American phrase of Guitar Hero.
FZ: Uh?
PV: Talking about Jerry Garcia and maybe the design of your concert.
FZ: Uh... I think so.

V: With the seven records nearly that you're going to release in one year, how many records have you recorded totally?
FZ: I think 42.

V: He's reading a book that said that the best records to buy or to know you, the best records that are really Zappa are Hot Rats and...
R3: Chunga's Revenge.
V: Chunga's Revenge, and which is the one you think you can say is really Zappa?
R3: Cuál es su disco.
V: What is your... your record?
FZ: Well, uh, the one that people know the most is Hot Rats, I think... but Sheik Yerbouti would be a better album to get that Chunga's Revenge.

V: What... what you think you have not [...] from doing cinema [...]
FZ: I'm happy in the media what I'm working in now.

V: Do you still carry on singing "Camarillo Brillo"?
FZ: Yes, we do, as a matter of fact we could have probably played it tonight, it's one of the songs we're playing on the tour, and if you want to come to San Sebastian tomorrow, I'll play it for you there.

V: He like it because of the castanets, if you like this Spanish [fino] Paco de Lucía and uh...
FZ: Well, I've always been fond of castanets, yes.

V: Why?
FZ: Because they sound like little tiny skeletons.
V: Porque suenan como pequeñas calaveras.

R3: ¿De verdad calaveras?
V: He says, skeletons?

V: He said that means that every concert is different, and if you live every concert in different way and you... if you really like that in the real live.
FZ: Yes, absolutely.

V: What differences have you find between the North American or American audiences and the Spanish one in general?
FZ: The Spanish people seemed to be having a good time even though they didn't know what we were saying and they also throw things on the stage which I don't like, and they don't do that on the United States.

V: What is the opinion you have about these contemporary musics, like John Cage, and also...
R3: Stockhausen.
V: Stockhausen, and also directs the orchestra [...].
FZ: I don't understand the question, but the name...
PV: What is your opinion about the musician, the contemporanean musicians, classic contemporanean musicians like John Cage, Stockhausen, and he's saying this because you take a... one time, you know, like classical conductor, you know, what is your opinion about this?
FZ: About other people who do that?
PV: Yeah, the both things, these people like John Cage or Stockhausen, this is one question, and other side is, why you take this... this...
FZ: Why did I take the stick?
PV: Yeah... the role...
FZ: Oh, it's not a role, it's functional, if you take the stick it's, you know, it's to show them where the beat is.

V: Do you always take the stick to the concert?
FZ: Yes, I always take the stick, sometimes I just use my hand, but the stick is easier for them to see, that's why conductor uses the stick.

V: Maybe the Spanish audience has not understood your lyrics, that's why you have helped them to understand with your gests and your way of being... and...
V: Your intention...
FZ: Oh, but that's what the gestures are supposed to do.

V: Did you really like the Monkees?
FZ: The Monkees mean nothing to me.

V: He says that you said that in the magazine Rolling Stone, that you liked the Monkees.
FZ: Just remember that anybody who believes what they read in Rolling Stone needs to have their head examined.

R3: Thank you very much, Frank.
FZ: You're welcome.
