1968: This is probably the most straightforward music performed this year. This is essentially performed as on "Freak Out!", complete with guitar solo, and overflowing with attitude. No messing around, no random instrumental noises, no weird musical intrusions (well, actually, there is an unreleased, short "sanitized" take on the main theme following the guitar solo, which somehow adds to the overall force of this tune)—just the mean spirited "Hungry Freaks Daddy". Frank, of course, cannot refuse throwing some random chaos into the closing chords, but that is par for the course and does not distract from the straightforward honesty of this song.

1974: Essentially performed as on "Unmitigated Audacity" from Beat the Boots Volume I, with Brock on vocals.

Frank asked me if I knew "Hungry Freaks, Daddy" and I knew the first part of it but when it got to the weirder chords they didn't spring immediately to my fingers and he said "Oop! Encyclopedia failure." And when dinner came around I took the Telecaster and went to a spare dressing room and figured out the chords, and then walked in to where he was having dinner and told him I'd learned the song, and he said we'd try it at the next soundcheck.

We practiced a myriad of cover tunes [...], in addition to "What Kind Of Girl Like You Doing In A Church Like This," we rehearsed "Time Is On My Side", "Lucy In The Sky", "Strawberry Fields", "Paperback Writer", "Taxman", "Norweigan Wood", "Within You Without You", "Sunshine Of Your Love"—there might have even been a couple more that I forgot about—and then, finally, we started work on "Hungry Freaks, Daddy."
